Work Begins On Monte Carlo

Casino Remains Closed To Public

Just three days after a three-alarm fire destroyed the top floors, construction crews have began the work to remove the charred façade from the Monte Carlo Hotel-Casino.

MGM Mirage Inc. -- the parent company of the Monte Carlo -- have hired contractors to meet the county's requirements. Building inspectors said the burned remains and roof must be removed from the structure before it can be reopened.

Of the guests in the 2,400 occupied rooms at the time of the evacuation, hotel officials said guests from fewer than 100 rooms have yet to reclaim their personal belongings. Crews will be taking those people into the casino Monday to get their bags.

The three-alarm blaze started around 11 a.m. Friday. Firefighters were able to knock it down by 1:30, with only minor injuries in 13 people.

Hotel officials said there will be hundreds of workers removing the damages to the famed Strip casino, but they did not say when they hope to have it reopen.

Fire crews are still investigating the cause of the blaze, saying only that it was an external fire. They have not released an estimate of damages at this time.
