LAS VEGAS -- When tourists think of Las Vegas, many think of the Strip, Elvis and quickie weddings. But the number of people tying the knot in Nevada has dropped for the fourth year in a row.The number of marriage licenses issued in Clark County dropped last year to about 107,000 -- the lowest number in a decade. Some people blame the marriage licensing office for not being open 24 hours. Another reason is the negative publicity the industry has received over the past few months. The Garden of Love was shut down after some said their marriages were not witnessed properly."That was a black eye for the industry," Joni Moss, with the Nevada Wedding Association, said. "I think statistically it's down, but there are other sectors on the rise."Two of these trends are renewals and commitment ceremonies, which do not require a license. To help the industry, local politicians are considering expanding the hours of the licensing office on holidays and weekends back to 24 hours.Las Vegas became famous for quickie weddings because there is no blood test or waiting period required to get married in the state. But you will need a valid picture ID and both parties must be present.
