LAS VEGAS -- Student-athletes at Green Valley High School may soon have to prepare for a new kind of test -- a random drug test. It’s an idea that will be discussed Wednesday night by parents and the school principal.Green Valley High School, home of the Gators, soon could be the home of the first drug testing policy for high school athletes -- an idea that's growing legs among students and parents. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that random drug testing of student-athletes is constitutional, but the ACLU thinks going this route is not a good idea.
“What happens to someone who tests positive? Do they get thrown out of school? Do they get arrested? Do they get counseling?” asked ACLU spokesman Allen Lichtenstein. Those questions will be discussed by parents and school principal Jeff Horn on Wednesday night.Last fall two seniors at Green Valley High School were busted for heroin possession. The meeting between parents and Principal Horn will begin at 6 p.m. on the school campus. Some private schools in the Valley having been testing students for several years now, including Faith Lutheran Junior-Senior High School, where 18 students are tested monthly.
