Jeffs' Attorneys Seek New Trial

Lawyer Claims Polygamist Leader's Rights Were Violated

Attorneys for polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs have petitioned Utah courts for a new trial in his accomplice-to-rape case.

Jeffs was convicted of using his status in the church to influence a 14-year-old girl to marry her 19-year-old cousin. Prosecutors said Jeffs forced the girl into the marriage and sex against her will.

He was sentenced to two consecutive terms of five years to life in prison for his involvement in the arranged marriage.

In the new trial petition, Jeffs' attorneys claim that Jeffs' right to due process was violated, under the protections of the Fifth and 14th amendments. It said that because of these violations, Jeffs was unable to get a fair trial.

Court officials have not issued a response to the attorney's petition.

Jeffs is currently in a Utah prison, waiting to go to trial on similar charges in Arizona.
