LAS VEGAS -- Mayor Oscar Goodman is calling for an investigation of the Lied Animal Shelter six months after a deadly disease outbreak. The investigation request comes after the Humane Society released a report regarding the deaths of 1,000 animals. In February, shelter officials had to euthanize a selection of cats and dogs after the parvovirus broke out amongst the animals. The Humane Society sent representatives to assess the situation and offer some recommendations. The report thoroughly discussed the poor conditions of the shelter, specifically noting the "severe problems with management and animal care."
"It was damning report," said Goodman. "When I read every word of that report -- relatively speaking -- that report makes Michael Vick look like St. Francis of Assisi."The city is investigating the several allegations in the report and looking into possible violations regarding the treatment and deaths of these animals."If I have anything to do with it, names will be named," said Goodman. After the outbreak, the shelter hired a new executive director, Christine Robinson, who was a former Clark County assistant manager."My focus has been on trying to move this organization forward and make it everything it should be, and animal care is where it needs to be," said Robinson.Robinson said the shelter's and animals' needs are being addressed and the shelter is fully cooperating with the investigation."There is almost nothing similar about this organization and who it was six or eight months ago," said Robinson. "The facility is clean; the animals are well cared for."The city's investigation is expected to take 60 days to complete. Goodman said the findings will be revealed at a public meeting.
