LAS VEGAS -- Safety authorities have identified the man killed in a construction-related mishap on the Strip.Harvey Englander, 65, died Thursday on a construction lift system at MGM Mirage's CityCenter project. Clark County fire officials said Englander was working on an elevator at the City Center construction site in a cage. They said he leaned over into the elevator's counterweight system and was cut in half.
"Apparently, he was in the framework with a grease gun greasing the counter-weight system," said Scott Allison, Clark County fire official, "(when) a heavy weight unit came down and struck him. That's what we believe killed him."
Investigators said the counterweight system travels at a rate of 300 feet per minute, so Englander died immediately.Officials with MGM Mirage said Englander's death is an unfortunate accident. While the circumstance is still under investigation, representatives with the company said Englander did not turn the machine off before he started working. But they said the machine being on may not have been the cause of Englander's death. This incident marks the third construction-related death at the CityCenter construction site, as well as the second construction-related death in a week.
