LAS VEGAS -- Judge Elizabeth Halverson said she is being unfairly treated because several of her peers are guilty of the same charges.State officials suspended Halverson last month for inexperience with criminal law and "poor judgment," including meeting with a jury while no lawyers were present.
Halverson said Ilene Spoor was intentionally looking for ways to discredit her while "fixing" traffic tickets and getting friends out of jury duty."She (Spoor) had plenty of time to spy on me," said Halverson. "It's strange that it would be (considered) slanderous that I tell an employee 'I don't want you to engage in, the very least, unethical behavior.'"Halverson has attempted to get Spoor's case thrown out, but on Friday a judge decided that Spoor could continue with her suit.Halverson admits she has made mistakes -- admitting to falling asleep in court once -- but she is quick to point out she is not the only judge."Those names will all be brought out," said Halverson. "It's unfortunate that they've chosen to pick on one person, but then the scrutiny's going to have to be turned on the rest of the judges."Halverson is on paid suspension while she appeals her removal. She said she will not let the issue go because she wants to "serve the voters."Spoor and her attorney said they are "tired" of the back-and-forth rhetoric and will wait until trial to tell their story.
