LAS VEGAS -- With the school year quickly approaching, the Clark County School District has another shortage to fill -- crossing guards.Officials said they currently need more than 110 new crossing guards to meet the schools' demand and that does not include several of the new schools opening this fall."I'm down to like 82 guards," said Gertie Owens, a crossing guard supervisor. "I should have twice that many. As fast as they come, they leave, not because they want to, because of ill health. We deal with mostly senior citizens."Metro is actively recruiting crossing guards and they hope the pay will attract people. The positions pay $8.91 an hour. Officials said workers will get paid for 2.5 hours a day even though most work only an hour and a half.
Metro said those interested in becoming a crossing guard can call the traffic department at 702-828-3762.
