LAS VEGAS -- Authorities with the Nevada Taxicab Authority said the Valley is in need of more taxis to keep up with the growing tourism and hotel demands. Many drivers said they do not make enough money right now and are fighting to keep more cabs off the streets. The authority came up with a compromise Monday which will allow more cabs on the road, but many drivers are still angry.NTA authorities said more taxis are necessary to cut down on the long lines and meet the demands of tourists and new properties."They feel that they'd like to make as much money as possible," George Balaban, president of Desert Cab Inc., "but the reality is we need cabs out there to serve the public."
After hours of cab driver testimony, the board decided to add 96 new cabs -- about half what was originally recommended."It's a tough issue," said Kathryn Collins, chairman of the NTA. "It is something we're required to look at every year by state statute. This has been emotionally-charged because of their concerns about decrease in wages certainly.""When you work over the years and you don't increase when the cost of living is going sky high, of course you want to have something better for your family," said Charles Lynch, a Henderson Taxi Driver. The 96 cabs will be added within the next six months. NTA officials said they are working with traffic experts to help cut down on traffic congestion.
