LAS VEGAS -- Even the best dieters get the bug every now and then -- the sweet tooth. In order to kill the urge without expanding your waistline, our Dream Team Diet editor Bonnie Johnson has some tips for you to help you combat that urge!
Cheesecake with Mint Cherry ToppingThere is nothing worse than a fat-free cheesecake. In this delicious end to a healthy summer dinner, savor a sliver your favorite cheesecake and forget the canned cherries in heavy sauce. Instead, pit a pound of fresh cherries (just now coming into season) and warm them up with a little bit of lime juice and a handful of chopped, fresh mint. The natural sugar in the cherries oozes out with the heat and creates a delicious, sweet sauce. Rather than drizzling a little sauce over the top, serve a sliver on top of a heaping helping of warm cherries! One quarter cup cherry pie filling = 85 calories One piece cheesecake = 256 calories Total: 341 caloriesOne half cup cherries = 45 calories One half piece of cheesecake = 125 calories Total: 175 caloriesNo-Guilt Banana SplitWhile a Dairy Queen banana split may be just what you crave, it packs serious calories. Make one at home and you get all the same delicious flavors but with less than half the calories.Take a pint of strawberries, wash and slice them and sprinkle with just a touch of powdered sugar. Let them sit while you prepare the rest. Open a can of crushed pineapple in juice (not syrup) and drain it. Unwrap your favorite dark chocolate bar and chop it into bite sized chunks. Like with the cheesecake, instead of putting a little fruit on top of a lot of ice cream, we are going to create a bed of fruit and decadent chocolate for our small scoops of ice cream. As a finishing touch, slice a whole banana and lay it alongside the ice cream and sprinkle with a handful of chopped peanuts.Dairy Queen Banana Split = 879 calories The Johnson Version = 392 caloriesDessert FlipsWhen counting calories people often forgo their favorite desserts and opt for sugar-free, fat-free and flavor-free alternatives. I propose a different philosophy: eat the real thing, just smaller portions, surrounded by a bounty of healthy fruits!
