SAN FRANCISCO -- The tax deadline has been extended for people who couldn't e-file their taxes Tuesday using Intuit Inc. software products, the Internal Revenue Service announced Wednesday.People affected by the problem have until midnight April 19 to file their returns, according to a news release.A flood of last-minute income tax returns swamped the computer servers of the California software company. Taxpayers filing electronically had to wait hours for confirmation that their forms made it to the IRS. The company said people affected by the delay include those who used TurboTax, ProSeries, Lacerte and the company’s free file offering, TurboTax Freedom.
Intuit confirmed Wednesday that the problems have been resolved. A spokesman for Intuit, the company that makes the popular TurboTax and ProSeries tax preparation software, said the delays started early Tuesday and got worse as the midnight filing deadline approached. During peak demand, the company was processing 50 to 60 returns a second. The company is urging users of its software to be patient and to try to get their returns done earlier next year.
