Orioles Release LHP Loewen, Outright Five Others

POSTED: 3:03 pm PDT October 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles released pitcher Adam Loewen on Monday, and also outrighted pitchers Randor Bierd and Rocky Cherry, infielder Brandon Fahey, outfielder Jeff Fiorentino and catcher Omir Santos to Triple-A Norfolk.

The 24-year-old Loewen was 0-2 with an 8.02 earned run average in seven games for the Orioles last season. He was placed on the disabled list on July 8 after he aggravated a stress fracture in his left elbow that ended his 2007 campaign as well.

Loewen was the Orioles' first-round pick (fourth overall) in the 2002 draft, but had his pitching career ended after just three seasons in the majors. In 35 games -- 29 starts -- with the Orioles, he posted an 8-8 record with a 5.38 ERA.

Loewen, who took part in Baltimore's fall instructional league, is attempting a comeback as a position player.

Bierd went 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in 29 games with the O's in 2008, while Cherry went 0-3 with a 6.35 ERA in 18 contests.

Fahey hit .226 with 12 RBI in 58 games for the Orioles, while Santos went 1- for-10 in 11 games.
