Pirates Hire Joe Kerrigan

POSTED: 12:10 pm PDT October 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates have named Joe Kerrigan the team's new pitching coach.

Kerrigan has plenty of experience in baseball. He was the bullpen coach of the New York Yankees for two seasons (2006-07) after working as a special advisor to senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman in 2005.

Prior to working for the Yankees, Kerrigan, who started his coaching career as the bullpen coach with the Montreal Expos in 1983 and became the club's pitching coach from 1992-96, has worked for the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox as their pitching coach. He was named the manager of the Red Sox during the 2001 campaign, but was replaced during spring training in 2002.

"Joe Kerrigan brings to the Pirates, a long and successful track record of developing and maximizing the performance of the pitchers on his staff," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "His teaching ability, work ethic and game planning will pay immediate dividends. Joe's passion, knowledge and experience will make a quality impact on our organization."

Kerrigan was a big league pitcher with Montreal and Baltimore from 1976-80. He worked in broadcasting for the Philadelphia Phillies this past season.
