Johnson's Homer Leads M's Past Rangers

POSTED: 10:30 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Rob Johnson hit his second career homer, a go- ahead two-run shot in the seventh inning, boosting the Mariners to a 4-1 win over the Texas Rangers.

Jack Hannahan, acquired in a trade from Oakland earlier Saturday, doubled and scored in the seventh inning, as Seattle took the third installment of the four-game series. Russell Branyan also homered.

Jarrod Washburn (6-6) threw seven strong innings to win his second straight start. Coming off a one-hit shutout against Baltimore, the southpaw limited the Rangers to four hits and a run, walking two and striking out three.

"He didn't miss a beat, went out there and did a phenomenal job against a good lineup," said Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu. "He kept them off balance, threw several pitches that were on the black. He didn't throw a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate."

Kevin Millwood (8-7) surrendered six hits and four runs over six-plus frames to suffer the loss.

Ian Kinsler drove in the lone run for Texas, which has lost two of three and dropped a half-game behind the Angels for first place in the AL West. The Rangers lost for just the third time in 11 games.

Ryan Langerhans singled to start the Seattle seventh. Johnson then clubbed a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left-center field, giving the hosts a 3-1 lead.

"He said he felt good," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Millwood. "He's a guy that if he's got nothing left, he'll tell us. He told us he could go out there for the seventh and so he went out. He was pitching pretty good and he's honest with us when you ask him how he feels and if he has anything left. He said he had something left...it didn't work out."

Hannahan, who was acquired in exchange for minor league pitcher Justin Souza, then doubled to center field. Eddie Guardado came in to relieve Millwood, but two batters later Ichiro Suzuki singled up the middle to account for the final margin.

Mark Lowe retired the side in order in the eighth, and David Aardsma worked around a Marlon Byrd two-out double in the ninth to notch his 19th save of the year.

Kinsler doubled in Elvis Andrus in the third inning. Kinsler made it to third, but Josh Hamilton fanned to end the frame. Branyan homered to right with two outs in the bottom of the inning.
