Phillies Rally For Five-Run Ninth; Shock Pirates

POSTED: 10:26 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Paul Bako's RBI single capped a five-run ninth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to take an 8-7 victory from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of three games at Citizens Bank Park.

Matt Capps (1-5) came on in the ninth to close things down and Matt Stairs greeted him with a pinch-hit home run into the right field stands. Jimmy Rollins then walked, but Shane Victorino flied out to deep center.

Chase Utley singled to put runners at the corners and Ryan Howard followed by crushing a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left-center field to tie the game. Raul Ibanez then roped a ground-rule double to center, and after an intentional walk to Jayson Werth and an infield single by Pedro Feliz, Bako knocked a grounder between short and third to score Ibanez and finish off the comeback win.

"The hard part was already done with Howard hitting the three-run homer," said Bako. "I'm glad my ball went through. It was a great win."

Howard finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Bako had two hits and two RBI for the Phillies, who have won four straight and are 8-1 on a 10- game homestand.

Cole Hamels started on the mound for Philadelphia, but was tagged for five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work. Tyler Walker (1-0) got the win for throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

Ibanez made his first appearance since June 17 due to a left groin strain. The team activated the All-Star left fielder on Friday and finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored on Saturday.

Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and two runs scored while Delwyn Young also had a two-run shot for the Pirates, who have dropped six of their last seven.

"The young guys are continuing to show great progress," said Pirates manager John Russell. "Guys are swinging the bats much better. Unfortunately, the bottom of the ninth told the tale of the game."

Ross Ohlendorf started on the mound and gave up three runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

The Pirates got off to a good start as they plated three runs in the first. With two outs, Garrett Jones crushed a 1-1 pitch deep into the right field stands. Ryan Doumit then hit a double and Young hit a 2-1 pitch that just cleared the left field fence.

Pittsburgh continued to shell Hamels in the second as McCutchen clubbed a two- run home run to give his squad a 5-0 lead.

The Phillies finally put some offense together in the sixth and got back into the game. With one out, back-to-back singles from Utley and Howard preceded an RBI double by Ibanez. A walk to Werth loaded the bases and Greg Dobbs followed with a sacrifice fly to center that brought home Howard.

Jesse Chavez then took the mound and was greeted with a single from Bako to score Ibanez and make it a 5-3 game. John Mayberry Jr. flied out to end the inning.

However, the Pirates got two back in the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, Scott Eyre took the mound and promptly walked Jones to bring home Jack Wilson. Doumit then hit a broken-bat grounder to third that Dobbs bobbled, allowing McCutchen to score for a 7-3 lead.

Philly got a leadoff single from Rollins to start the bottom of the seventh, but he got doubled up when Shane Victorino hit a blooper to shallow left where Wilson made a sliding catch. Utley was hit by a pitch and Howard walked but Ibanez struck out to end the frame.

John Grabow, who tossed the seventh inning, stayed on in the eighth and retired the Phils in order.
