Nats Use Offensive Explosion To Rout Astros

POSTED: 10:22 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Josh Willingham hit two home runs, doubled and drove in four as the Nationals achieved season-bests in runs and hits en route to a 13-2 drubbing of the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

Willingham, Nick Johnson and Adam Dunn homered consecutively in the sixth. It was the first time the club homered in three straight at-bats since 1997 when the franchise was located in Montreal.

"It was good. We got on the board early," said Dunn. "We continue to put pressure on people. We've had chances to break games open a bunch of times, and tonight we did it."

Both Johnson and Dunn collected three hits and two RBI, and Alberto Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI as the Nats pounded out 21 hits, a season-high 10 for extra bases.

Amid the offensive onslaught, rookie right-hander Craig Stammen (2-4) picked up his second career win and first complete game. He scattered nine hits and two runs while walking one and fanning two.

Washington halted both an eight-game losing streak on the road and five-game slide overall in this third installment of a four-game series.

Mike Hampton (5-6) was knocked around for nine hits and five runs in just 3 2/3 innings. Felipe Paulino and Jeff Fulchino came on in relief and gave up four runs each in the setback as Houston had won five of six.

"Tough night at the ball yard tonight," said Astros manager Cecil Cooper. "We got a lot of pitches up and they didn't miss many."

Miguel Tejada and Lance Berkman drove in the runs for Houston while Michael Bourn set a career-high with three stolen bases and scored twice.

Willingham opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first and Dunn drove him in with a single to center for the early 2-0 advantage.

The Astros responded in the home half with an RBI groundout by Berkman and Tejada tied the contest with an RBI double in the third, but the Nats exploded for 11 runs over the next four frames.

Gonzalez and Cristian Guzman had RBI singles in the fourth and Nyjer Morgan added a sac fly for a 5-2 game. Gonzalez came through again in the fifth with a run-scoring base knock and the Nats went back-to-back-to-back in the sixth off Paulino for a 9-2 margin.

Stammen helped himself with an RBI double to start a four-run seventh. Johnson later scored Stammen with a single to right and Willingham followed with his second homer of the game to cap the fireworks.
