With a mandatory evacuation issued for Beaumont, Texas and its surrounding counties, residents prepared their homes before hitting the road, KPRC-TV reported Saturday.

Long lines formed at gas stations because drivers needed to fill up before evacuating. Some stations ran out of fuel. Traffic was backed up for miles on Interstate 10 heading west.

As the clock ticked and Gustav got closer to the coast, all the hospitals in the area were evacuated. Military planes evacuated nursing home residents and people with disabilities and medical needs to inland shelters early Saturday.

All of the stores and restaurants in the area were closed.

More than 3,000 inmates Beaumont were transferred by bus to jails and prisons in Huntsville and Livingston.
