JACKSON, Miss. -- Dozens of nursing home residents were evacuated Friday night from New Orleans to Mississippi ahead of Hurricane Gustav's landfall, according to WAPT-TV.

The St. Margaret's Daughters' Nursing Home moved residents twice within New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast three years ago.

The nursing home made a plan to evacuate its residents from the city ahead of future threatening storms, putting that plan into action on Friday.

Comperes Nursing home workers in Mississippi spent all day Friday preparing for the residents being brought in.

"All the residents that we are receiving are very sick," one worker said. "We have had extra supplies brought in. We have dietary staff staying and nursing staff staying."

After Hurricane Katrina, the two homes made a deal to take evacuated residents.

"The resident has got to come first. You just never know what the risk is going to be and the hazard is going to be to in that type of situation," Lisha Woodard said.

The Comperes Nursing Home added beds in two rooms for the New Orleans evacuees and increased its on-duty nursing staff in preparation for Gustav's effect on Jackson.

Mississippi state law requires every hospital and nursing home to have an evacuation plan that includes transportation arrangements. Evacuation sites for Gulf Coast nursing homes are on alert, and buses for the evacuations are on standby.
