The Louisiana National Guard announced that 1,500 soldiers were scheduled to arrive in New Orleans on Friday.

The soldiers were scheduled to leave the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, La., according to WDSU-TV.

The New Orleans convention center is scheduled to serve as the main staging area for personnel and equipment preparing for Tropical Storm Gustav, forecast to become a hurricane as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico.

Guard commanders said the incoming troops would link up with troops already in New Orleans in the lasting wake of Hurricane Katrina. Previously, the guard has said there are about 300 guardsmen still left in New Orleans.
