TSA Lists Holiday Carry-Ons That Won't Fly

Canned, Bottled Food Items Not Welcome On Flights

Airline passengers may run afoul of airport security regulations if they attempt to carry on prohibited items aboard holiday fights.

U.S. and European airport security officers regularly confiscate liquids over 3 ounces (100 ml), but some confusion can arise when trying to bring holiday food items that aren't true liquid but aren't solid either.

In response, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration specifically lists which holiday foods and gift items won't fly.

Prohibited Carry-On Items:
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Creamy dips and spreads (cheeses, peanut butter, etc.)
  • Gift baskets with food items (salsa, jams and salad dressings)
  • Gravy
  • Jams
  • Jellies
  • Lotions
  • Maple syrup
  • Oils and vinegars
  • Salad dressing
  • Salsa
  • Sauces
  • Soups
  • Wine, liquor and beer
  • Snowglobes
  • Cologne
  • Perfume

TSA officials said that pies and cakes can be taken through security, but will be subject to additional screening.

The TSA also said fliers should not bring wrapped holiday gifts on a plane, because security officers may have to unwrap them for screening and rewrapping will not be provided.
