CPSC Offers Warnings For Parents

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission believes it has a list all parents should check twice this holiday season.

Recall List Of Toys, Products | CPSC Release

Hoping parents will make diligent shopping decisions, the CPSC released its list of top-five toy hazards on Wednesday.

The list includes:

  1. Scooters and other Riding Toys: Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates can sometimes go too fast for children. Helmets and safety gear should be worn at all times and be sized to fit.
  2. Small Balls and other Toys with Small Parts: For children younger than 3, try to avoid toys with small parts, which can cause possible choking.
  3. Balloons: Children 8 years old and younger can choke or suffocate on uninflated or broken balloons.
  4. Magnets: For children under the age of 6, avoid building or play sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.
  5. Chargers and Adapters: Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.

“The CPSC, CBP and industry have one goal in mind, to keep the toys our children play with the safest in the world,” acting-chairman Nancy Nord said in a release.

“Vigorous inspection of toys, testing and law enforcement have made toys the safest this season,” she said.

The CPSC recommends parents quickly discard plastic wrappings on toys and to keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.

Parents should pay close attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers to avoid overcharging.

Because of the growing popularity of second-hand toys, the agency urges parents to play close attention to recalls.
