How Do You Return An Online Gift?

Make Sure You Save Original Packaging, Papers

Now that you've opened all your presents, you've learned that you have three of the same books. Don't worry -- if any of those books were bought online, they're easy to return.

If the gift was shipped to you directly, make sure you save everything, including the original packaging. You'll also need to keep the order confirmation form that came with the box -- this will be your gift receipt.

Now, if that e-tailer has a physical location in town, such as Wal-Mart or Toys R Us, you can return that gift to the store. But make sure you bring that packing slip.

If you don't want to deal with the hassle of the mall, ship it back by mail. Just use the same box and the store's shipping label. Some online companies will send you this shipping label with your gift, while others require you to print it from the Web site.

Either way, it's best to use the store's shipping label because it's convenient and could save you some money. Some retailers will pay for this shipping cost if your gift is broken or defective, while others will deduct that cost from your refund.

Now, if you didn't get an order confirmation form or you threw it away, check out the store's Web site or call their customer service number. Most stores can usually track online purchases and can easily refund or exchange your gift.

One other thing -- you'll want to act fast. Most of these stores only have a 30-day return policy.
