Health District Confirms 9th Hep C Case

Patient Had 1 Procedure At Facility, Contracted Virus, Officials Say

A ninth case of chronic hepatitis C has been confirmed from the exposure from the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada, said officials from the Southern Nevada Health District.

The patient had one procedure at the facility and tested positive for the virus during the proceeding investigation into the outbreak, officials said.

From March 2004 to January 2008, health investigators said the staff at the facility reused medical vials and syringes on multiple patients, exposing 50,000 people to blood-borne pathogens.

After the announcement of the exposure in February, former patients of the facility were requested to be tested for hepatitis B,C and HIV. Nine total cases -- including one from sister-facility, the Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center -- have been confirmed by the SNHD, with more than 80 other cases of hepatitis B and C and HIV being linked to the center.

The Endoscopy Center and five sister facilities were closed to medical practices after the February announcement, and the medical license of Dr. Dipak Desai and Dr. Eladio Carrera were suspended.

Five nurses from the facility recused their licenses, and the investigation remains ongoing.
