A worker at a farm in New Hampshire was bitten by a monkey on Friday, Manchester television station WMUR reported.

Police said Eric Carlson, 22, had just finished cleaning the cage of a 35-pound macaque named Junior when he was bitten.

Charmingfare Farm owner John Pyteraf said Carlson put the macaque in a secondary enclosure but forgot to lock the gate between him and Junior.

The macaque got out of the enclosure and bit Carlson on the calf.

Carlson was taken to Elliot Hospital and treated for the wound. Police described the injury as serious, but Carlson was listed in good condition.

The macaque has been placed in quarantine for observation.

"I know we've been in touch with the USDA to make sure we're doing everything OK, as well as with the state veterinarian," Pyteraf said. "He's under quarantine for 10 days. He's been with us for a while, never been sick, so we're not concerned about anything like that."

Pyteraf said Junior was brought to the facility two years ago after being rescued from a home in Manchester, where it was being kept illegally.

Officials said the macaque was in an area not accessible by the public at the time Carlson was bitten.
