Tom Hanks was already well-settled in his role as Hollywood’s “everyman” by the time he played “Forrest Gump” in 1994.The A-lister had already starred in such runaway hits as “Splash,” “Big” and “Sleepless in Seattle” and won a Best Actor Oscar for “Philadelphia.”But “Gump,” which took only 66 days to pass the $250 million mark at the box office, hit a nerve that spanned generations as its simple-minded main character stumbled through many of the major historical events of the second half of the 20th century.Through the eyes of Forrest Gump, viewers saw new perspectives on the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the excesses of the 1970s and even a box of chocolates. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, another Best Actor award for Hanks and Best Director for Robert Zemeckis, according to IMDb.All of the film’s major players have continued their work and are still entertaining us now, 15 years later.Since “Gump,” Hanks has starred in “Apollo 13,” the “Toy Story” series, “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Green Mile,” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Angels & Demons.” He’s also since jumped behind the camera, writing and directing “That Thing You Do!” in 1996 and producing the HBO series “From the Earth to the Moon.”Zemeckis went on to direct “Contact” in 1997, the animated “Beowulf” in 2007 and this season’s Disney blockbuster, “A Christmas Carol,” with Jim Carrey. After being nominated for an Oscar for his “Gump” role as Lt. Dan Taylor, Gary Sinise went on to star in “Apollo 13” with former co-star Hanks, the HBO film “Truman” and “Mission to Mars.” He now anchors his own series on CBS, “CSI: NY.”Robin Wright Penn, well known for marrying actor Sean Penn, played Gump’s lifelong sweetheart, Jenny. According to IMDb, she was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her work in the film. She went on to star in “Moll Flanders” and has a voice part in Zemeckis’ “A Christmas Carol” this year. She has filed for divorce from Penn.Mykelti Williamson played Gump’s Army pal, Pvt. Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue, famous for his exposition on the ways shrimp can be cooked. Since the film, Williamson has starred in “Waiting to Exhale,” “Heat” and “Con Air.” He also continues to be active on TV and on the stage. In 1998, he was acquitted of attempted manslaughter in the stabbing of his ex-wife’s companion.Sally Field, who originally came to prominence as “Gidget” and the “The Flying Nun,” played Gump’s mother, even though she was only 10 years Hanks’ senior. She went on to star in “Where the Heart Is” with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd. She also starred in 12 episodes of NBC’s “ER” and recently earned an Emmy for her role on ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters,” according to IMDb.
