NCAA Game Summary - UNLV Vs. San Diego State

POSTED: 6:10 pm PDT March 12, 2009

(Sports Network) - Lorrenzo Wade scored a team-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as San Diego State routed UNLV, 71-57, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Tim Shelton, Ryan Amoroso and Kyle Spain each chipped in with 10 points apiece for San Diego State (22-8), which has won four straight. The Aztecs will play BYU in the semifinals on Friday.

Richie Williams and Billy White had eight and six points, respectively, for the Aztecs, who shot 50 percent from the field, including 53.3 percent from beyond the arc.

"I thought our three performances against UNLV were good, better and this was the best one," San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher said. "This was the best of the three. And it was keyed by our seniors. But I'm more proud of our group collectively, and in particular our seniors who have done so much for this program."

Wink Adams had a game-high 26 points to lead UNLV (21-10), which has dropped two in a row and three of its last four, but still hopes to get a berth in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Tre'Von Willis registered a double-double with 11 points to go along with 10 boards, while Rene Rougeau had seven points in defeat.

San Diego State jumped out to a 24-11 lead following a three-pointer by Wade near the midpoint of the opening half. The Aztecs continued to have their way with things throughout the stanza and built the advantage to 42-27 heading into the intermission.

In the second, it was all SDSU in the early going as Matt Thomas' jumper put the Aztecs ahead 56-39 5 1/2 minutes in and they maintained a comfortable double-digit lead for the next several minutes.

The Rebels were able to draw within nine at 63-54 following a make by Adams with 5:06 remaining, but San Diego State would be too much down the stretch and it cruised to the easy win.

"The ballgame, I thought San Diego State played great," UNLV head coach Lon Kruger said. "I thought they had a lot of control of what was going on on both ends of the floor really from start. Made a little bit of a run there in the second half. San Diego State made plays they needed to at critical times to keep the margin where it was."

Game Notes:

Despite the loss, UNLV still holds a 31-15 advantage all-time against San Diego State...Thomas finished with five points and four rebounds...The Rebels shot 39.1 percent from the floor, but only 23.5 percent from three-point range.
